Wisdom of the Day

There is something about newness that is refreshing. Most days, something new evokes a thrill, like the feeling of being on top of a rollercoaster. And there are the other days, when your body is getting used to the new routines {or lack thereof}, like how the body molds into what we do all day.

And then there are those days when, well. I shall let this photo and caption from what is about to be my favorite coffee table book ever,Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton.

A particular caption gripped me, and hard, today. It reads:

It is important to maintain your equanimity. You cannot let yourself get too 'up' or too 'down' based on your circumstances."

"Too 'down' I understand. But why not too 'up?'"

"Because the higher your mountains are, the deeper your valleys will seem. You should not react to the world. You should respond, but not react. A response is an action based on logic. A reaction is an emotional state. Your reaction will not change the world. Your reaction only changes you. Your response will change the world.

There's a certain power from brokenness. Make sure that it works to your advantage and do not let it drag you down.

Your reaction will not change the world. Your reaction only changes you. Your response will change the world.
