Things I Love Sundays: The Importance of Hobbies
It’s Sunday once again and it will be a work day again tomorrow. For the first time in a long time I don’t dread it so much. Perhaps it’s the anticipation of something exciting and not really knowing what will happen but I’m at that point, afraid but also raring to go.
Sometimes though, I admit that I’m just any other normal human being trying to be productive during quarantine: I am exhausted. As I navigate this new normal, I am finding more and more ways to cope and help myself. This is how I began to develop new hobbies that I’ve forgotten somehow. Before, when I’m bored or burned out, I would just tune out, browse Instagram, IGS myself, and engage with other people. Now that all I do is talk to people online, I kind of had to find hobbies that wasn’t being social or drinking.
This is how I discovered digital illustrations. Of course I am quite far from the artists who get commissioned to do portraits but if there’s anything, it was finding something beyond laying out app screens for work, or editing my face on Lightroom. For once, I could maximize the pencil I’ve purchased back in the day of the release of my iPad 2 (LOL) which I BTW resurrected. A hobby was something I thoroughly enjoyed — but didn’t need to monetize. Geez, so tired of monetizing every little thing, TBH.
I also started giving my dogs a grooming. While this is not a hobby, more like a necessity in this day that they’ve become so fluffy and no groomers are open, I am learning from that craft and at the very least, can help them achieve shorter fur and groomed selves.
I also relearned to meditate. In the middle of a busy work day, I stepped away from my laptop, plugged my noise canceling ear phones and meditated for 13 minutes and felt like a new human being afterwards. A personal favorite is the Insights Timer app.
That’s all for me today! I hope whomever you are, you’re having a great day, week or month! xx
